| Students in Mr. Desilets' classes have many opportunities for language arts enrichment. One of the more unusual opportunities involves "testing out" of some of the regular class work. Students who successfully test out of a unit work independently, with teacher assistance, on projects of their own choosing. These projects must address important language arts goals, must be doable within the classroom, and must result a product that shows real learning. These projects may make use of the Internet access that is readily available in Mr. Desilets' classes, and they count as major graded activities. If a student feels that he or she already knows the material being presented in class, he or she has the option of taking a pretest on that unit. This pretest does not count as a class grade; but, if the student demonstrates mastery of the material by scoring ninety-five percent or above on the pretest, he or she is not required to participate in most of the class activities on that material. A student who tests out of a unit does take the unit's final test with the class, and that grade does count toward his or her quarter grade. Here are some outstanding resources for language arts enrichment. Many of these require students to provide information about themselves, such as their names. Students should be sure to check with parents before taking advantage of these resources for learning.
