Grade 6 Outside Reading Supplementary reading assignments encourage students to read extensively and explore the types of books and authors you like. Outside Reading - Students may choose to read one, two, or three books per term. They may choose any type of book. Mr. Desilets must approve your choice. Outside Reading counts as a major grade. The grade is dependent on the number of books read as well as the quality of the Reader Responses.
Students will receive extra credit if they read more than the required number of books. Procedure: 1. Choose a book you would like to read. select a book that is interesting, appropriate, and suitable to your reading level. 2. Bring the book to Mr. Desilets for approval. 3. Read the book. 4. Write a brief (one to one and a half pages) Reader Response. The directions for the Reader Responses appear below.
Reader Response Sheet Instructions For each book listed above, write a reader response sheet. On a separate piece of paper, write a one or two-page response to your book. Be sure to organize your thoughts well and to check sentences and paragraphs. Your paper should be neat and proofread. Include the following information. First Paragraph--Include title, author, type of book, and age level of readers. Second Paragraph--Write a general description of the book, including setting, characters, conflicts, or problems. Explain what the book is about, but do not attempt a detailed plot summary. Third Paragraph--Present your opinion of the book. Be thoughtful in your analysis. Do you like this type of book? Why or why not? Do you like this author? Why or why not? Staple the Reader Response Sheets to this form. Outside Reading is due two weeks before grades close.
